  18. <p>     Twenty-five years ago, in Selma, Ala., club-wielding police
  19. attacked civil rights marchers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Now
  20. the city of 27,000 is again experiencing racial turmoil. Last
  21. week 150 black high school students boycotted classes to protest
  22. the school board's failure to renew the contract of black
  23. Superintendent Norward Roussell. Governor Guy Hunt ordered
  24. National Guardsmen to protect students who went to school
  25. despite the boycott.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     In three years at the helm of the 70% black school system,
  28. Roussell alienated whites by, among other things, revising the
  29. "tracking" system that had long channeled black students into
  30. lower-level courses. After the board's six white members voted
  31. to get rid of Roussell last December, five black board members
  32. quit in protest. Last week's boycott ended after five days, when
  33. Roussell appealed to the students to return to class. But
  34. biracial talks to determine his future broke down with no
  35. resolution of the impasse.
